The area in which Scalea rises has been abode of an ancient civilization. In a cavern adjacent to Torre Talao (Talao Tower) have been found materials referable to Paleolith. Sources of a certain reliability talk about an important city of italic origin perhaps, greek perhaps, that rose in the lowland of the Lao river. This city, Laos was certainly colonized by fugitive nucleus of the powerful Sibari, destroyed in 510 B.C.
In 389 B.C. there was a bloody battle between Lucanis and Turiis in the Lao lowland, battle that finished with the victory of the first ones. Since then the traces of Laos are lost: we can affirm that this city presumably went destroyed.
Lavinium rose at the time of the Romans, near the ancient Laos. The actual Scalea was almost certainly founded by Laos descendants. Lavinium was Byzantine, then Norman and rose against the Angioinis for the Aragonesis. It was, moreover, feud of the Sanseverinos and Spinellis up to 1806.
S. Maria Church preserves a painting of the circumcision dated 1700. The “S. Nicola in Plateis” parish (XIV cent.) guards the rests of a Gothic construction while the crypt with cross vault lodges the Admiral Ademaro Romano’s mausoleum. Wonderful is the Talao Tower (dated XVI century), restored in not distant times, and that is practically situated on the beach.
