Santa Maria del Cedro was founded in the middle of the XVII century, with the forced abandonment of Abatemarco, following to the destruction caused by the homonym river. The territory, named Abatemarco, was for a long time feud of the Brancati family in Naples that purchased it to a public auction. The Brancati property also included Urso Marzo (Orsomarso), Grisolia and Marcellina. The Brancatis’ were the owners up to the end of the feudalism, when the last of the barons retreated to live in Diamante.
It was at first hamlet of Grisolia with the name of Cipollina. It become an autonomous municipality named S. Maria, and only in 1968 took the name of S. Maria del Cedro, thanks to the abundant production of cedars.
S. Maria del Cedro is situated between Scalea and Cirella. You have to turn aside from the speedway and go on for a pair of kilometres. Along the coast is developing the sea zone. Finally, interesting is the “Rosario di Pompei” Church (situated in the sea zone), the only church in ceramics in Calabria. The patronal party is in September 20th. In all the cafes of the zone it’s possible to taste cedar ice-creams and water-ices. In every house don’t miss cedar liquors and infusions.
