San Nicola Arcella, Scalea’s hamlet, probably risen by a Norman colony, set to watch the coast threatened by continuous raids. This country subsequently belonged to different vassals (Sanseverinos and Spinellis). In 1912, it was detached from Scalea, becoming an autonomous municipality.
The inhabited area rises in a picturesque position, the edge of a precipice on the sea (110 metres high). Going down, toward the sea, a wonderful beach opens in the rock, with a natural harbour, the only one in the zone closed to the winds, and where the boats find refuge from the storms.
Lord Marion Crawford, an English writer, sojourned in the harbour’s tower, for long periods, to write in loneliness his novels.
Both the historical centre and the new part are situated along the coast. There is a deviation from the speedway that reaches the country continuing for a pair of kilometres. The feast dedicated to the patron is in September 10th. There are many manifestations during the summer. In the houses are prepared excellent “fusilli” (homemade pasta) and the Christmas and New Year’s Eve traditional desserts.
