The origin of the name is the most uncertain of the whole coast. According to a tradition, would be connected to the presence in the zone of a bear that habitually attended a wood belonging to the Marzo or Marzio Family. From this, Ursomarcius or Ursumarzo since XIII cent. Orsomarso is a centre of great environmental interest, but also of a certain historical importance. The Church of San Giovanni Battista, to be restored, is built on the ruins of a medieval chapel and shows signs of a seventeenth-century remaking. There are, inside the chaple, some frescos by Giovan Battista Colimodio (XVII cent.), but also others of unknown author (the 1st half of ‘400). There is a painting in the Church of the Saviour that someone ascribes to Luca Giordano. The Church of Santa Maria di Mercuri is situated in Mercurio countryside, not too far the inhabited area, on the summit of the cliff that dominates the Lao Valley. This church dates VI century and was constructed by monks coming from Syria. The architecture is similar to that of many Byzantine churches of the coast in Calabria and Southern Italy.
