Maratea’s toponym seems to have been coined by Greek farmers allocated along the Policastro Gulf, at the Magna-Greece Age, to evoke the famous Greek city of Maratona. Maratea’s name, according to another hypotheses, would derive from Thea Maris, that is Goddess of the Sea.
Maratea’s inhabited area is overhung from San Biagio Mountain, on whose peak rises the Statue of the Savior, second for size only to that of Rio de Janeiro. Under the statue, on a side of the mountain, there are the ruins of the castle’s ancient suburb, in the middle of a wild nature. The historical centre offers a wonderful concentration of buildings and monuments of great historical and architectural value, among which a lot of churches. Maratea, not by chance, is known as “the city of 44 churches”, rich in precious artistic proofs. Maratea’s coast is covered by the Mediterranean stain’s typical vegetation and embellished, offshore, by rock-cliffs and islets. It winds for about 30 km, between the Mezzanotte Canal and the mouth of Noce River, with high and steep rocky faces that sometimes form a promontory in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and sometimes withdraw, receiving small coves and sandy beach.
The pure sea backdrops, particularly appreciated by the scuba divers, are populated by a rich faunal variety (actinia, horny coral, starfish) and preserve the antiquity’s vestiges of which only a part has been brought to light (anchors and vessels of valuable manufacture). Every year, in summertime there is a cultural, artistic and musical review, Maratea in festa: concerts of classical and pop music, debates, exhibitions and so many other cultural and artistic happenings.
