Situated at the centre of the “Cedars Coast”, Diamante is called “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea”. Its geographical position, its almost 8 km of beaches, make it one of the tourist destination in Calabria. Diamante has one of the only two islands of the region, the island of Cirella.
The first news on the birth of a real inhabited area date back to 1500. Diamante soon began a fairly good centre for fishing and agriculture, thanks to its large fleet and the production of the cedar. The particular characteristics of this citrus fruit, in its autochthonous variety called “Smooth cedar of Diamante”, made it unique and famous all over the world.
The Church of Immaculate Conception, built and restored in 1880, is situated in the ancient part of the town.
Diamante is also renowned as “City of the Murals”, for a lot of pictures it’s possible to admire walking in the lanes of the town. There are, in fact, over 150 works of art painted on the walls of the historical centre and so in Cirella, realised since 1981 by painters and artists of international fame. The poets Matilde Serao and Gabriele D’Annunzio have addressed their attention to the so-called “pearl of the Tyrrhenian sea”. Diamante is the biggest open-air museum in Italy.
Among the typical products, we remind the citron liqueur, the candied cedar, the “panicilli”, aromatic grapes wrap up in the leaves of the cedar. Another product typically linked to the local gastronomy is the chilli, to which since 1992 here is dedicated a yearly manifestation called “Peperoncino Festival”. The manifestation takes place in the first days of September and last about a week, with its tastings, cabaret, exhibitions, presentation of books, medical conventions and prize-giving of the best degree thesis on the chilli.
The Italian Academy of the chilli has here its seat and counts so many members in all over the world.
Diamante, thanks to its special beauty, is often chosen as location for films (“L’abbuffata” with Gérard Depardieu; “Ma l’amore si” with Anna Maria Barbera; “Per sempre” with Giancarlo Giannini and Francesca Neri).
In the neighbouring city of Scalea, on the Lao River, we remind canoe and rafting international competitions. In Praia a Mare, few km to Diamante, moreover, is situated the 2nd biggest Aqua Park of the region.
