Belvedere Marittimo has ancient origins on which there are different discordances among the historians. The thesis most recurrent sees this city linked to the sub-colony of Sibari denominated Skidro. The actual centre, however, presumably goes up again to the XII century. Ruggero the Norman made build there the famous castle, around which rotates the whole history of this country, and that has become its concrete symbol.
As in many other centres of the coast, also for Belvedere, the bathing zone has more and more assumed a predominant role in comparison to the historical centre from which is about two kilometres, and that, however, is rich of life and activity.
Ruggero the Norman’s castle (today of private ownership), that also shows some remaking of Aragonese age, preserves two cylindrical towers and part of the drawbridge.
In the Church of the Crucifix (Chiesa del Crocifisso) there is a wooden crucifix dating back to the ‘600, a full relief sculpture, whole figure. The convent of Cappuccini of sober architecture of the first Baroque preserves paintings, sculptures and carvings in wood dated ‘600-‘700.
